This really stupid hack has saved me hours of time... not to mention seriously reduced my stress levels.
And it all started with a mistake.
I thought the self-transition to my new cell phone would be just fine. I'd done it before.
But somewhere along the way...
I hit the wrong button and...
NOTHING transferred to my new iPhone.
The data was there in the cloud (sigh of relief!) but I had to redownload all my apps, reconfigure my settings and wallpaper, and reorganize all of my folders.
As I'm sure you can imagine, I was not super pleased about the situation. I can think of far better things to do with my free time.
Not only that, but change is hard.
I'm still confused by where the camera flip button is on the "new" FaceTime set up (it's been what? like a year or two already?) and having to find everything and reset it made me wish I'd never decided to upgrade.
So I decided to find joy where I could and name my new folders in an action-oriented, tongue-in-cheek fashion.
Things like:
- "Build business"
- "Grow wealth"
- "Read this"
- "Watch that"
But for my social media apps, I decided on some extra snark.
"Waste Time"
I thought I was being cutesy but seriously, I've not browsed Instagram in a year and I only checked Facebook the other day to get updates on an upcoming reunion.
As for LinkedIn, I give it a cursory review every few days, mostly to check in on invites and understand (outside of my AI-automated daily meeting prep) who I'm meeting with.
It wasn't like this change came easily.
But for weeks after my transition to the new phone, every time my finger hovered over the bright pink Instagram square, I'd see "Waste Time", realize I was just bored or looking for a dopamine hit, and decide I had better things to do.
Like working with clients, building my business, enjoying real life...
So if you find yourself doomscrolling or just determined to not be so owned by the algorithm....
For quite possibly the silliest but most effective hack I can think of...
You're welcome.
