Goal Setting Tips For Small Law Firm Growth
Put It In Writing
Evan Polin, Polin Performance Group
Put your plan in writing and review your plan on a regular basis. In addition, make sure that you have someone who can hold you accountable to executing upon that plan.
When the goals are in black and white and you have someone to hold you accountable, you are more likely to do what is needed to be done on a regular basis (even if you are not entirely comfortable with those activities) to achieve those goals.
Marry Passion With Pragmatism
Walter Miller, Norman, Professional Services
Create a written plan with specific goals. AND have that plan start with some kind of vision creating exercise. This marries your heart and passion for law with a pragmatic road map for success.
Build Whole Life Goals, Not Just Business Goals
Sarah Reiff-Heking, True Focus Coaching, Inc.
Create a clear list of goals for your business and your life outside of work. Make sure you think about your whole life, not only business goals. That way you can target the whole life that you want to create in addition to the business that you want.

For Growth: Consider Your Approach
Borrow The Approach Of The Bigger Guys
Ron Bockstahler, Amata Law Offices
Organize and run your law firm as if it were a publicly traded company; maximizing the return for shareholders. Treat yourself as an employee with a modest salary and a lucrative bonus incentive. This is what AM200 law firms are doing and the procedures they have in place result in handsome payouts for their partners each year.
Start with writing a job description for yourself and if you are an attorney billing hours to clients and your job description reflects a ""jack-of-all-trades"" approach, change it. Your job description should be limited to generating new business, performing legal work, managing other billable attorneys, and, at most, a few hours each month to give direction to and receive reports from your subordinates.
If you are not yet billing millions each year, hire fractional support team members to handle IT, accounting, marketing, HR, paralegal work, and an assistant to manage daily tasks that are not related to practicing law.
As you grow, engage an operations consultant to create processes and procedures to keep your firm operating efficiently and to assist in using statistics/data to determine when the work justifies hiring full-time staff.
By maintaining flexibility in your practice, you reduce the financial burden that comes with fixed costs and allows you to enjoy your work, without wasting time worrying about making payroll or paying rent. The business world has evolved and fractional support services provide small law firms with a cost effective way to compete with larger, resource rich law firms.

Small Law Firm Marketing Tips for 2025
Build A Robust Digital Presence
Marc Apple, Forward Push | Law Firm Marketing
If there’s one thing every small or solo law firm should prioritize to make 2025 their best year ever, it’s building a robust digital presence through SEO and content marketing.
SEO isn’t just about having a nice website—it’s about making sure potential clients can find you when they’re searching for legal solutions in your area.
By investing time and effort into creating high-quality, targeted content that answers the questions your potential clients are asking, you can increase your website’s visibility and establish your firm as a trusted authority. Whether it’s through blog posts, optimized service pages, or even video content, this approach directly leads to more inquiries and ultimately more clients.
Get Clear On Your Ideal Clients
Susan Gold, Susan Gold Coaching
Be clear on your growth strategy. This means who are your ideal clients that are high revenue, high profitability and high fit factors (good clients however you define that) and align your messaging, networking, and other engagement activities to be seen and heard by them. Don't be all things to all people. Anybody and everybody = nobody when it comes to marketing and networking.
Master Your Niche
Steve Fretzin, BE THAT LAWYER with FRETZIN
Every small or solo firm should commit to mastering their niche. When you specialize, you become the go-to expert in that area, which attracts higher-quality clients and allows you to charge premium rates.
In 2025, consider narrowing your focus to a specific practice area where you can truly excel. This will differentiate you from competitors and create a clear value proposition for prospective clients. Mastering a niche also makes your marketing more targeted, leading to better client acquisition and retention.
Answer Your Phone
Nicole Wetzell, NEW Marketing Solutions
I always feel like I'm Captain Obvious for stating this one: answer the phone. Clio just released its 2024 legal trends report, and research shows that 67% of law firms do not answer the phone or return calls—which is worse than in years past. Simply returning calls will help make 2025 your banner year.

Leverage Personal Branding (Your Referrals Are!)
Angela Dunz, Biz Dev Badass
Personal Branding sets you apart and helps you build trust. Building a strong and consistent personal and firm brand in person and online is an excellent way to get more referrals.
94% of Attorney referrals look at your LinkedIn profile first. That is a great opportunity to clearly state what you do, who you serve, and how you are different. A strong Brand = Trust.
Diversify Your Marketing
Laura Sauter, Agency Bel
Diversify your marketing! Successful Marketers engage customers across an average of 10 channels. It takes on average 7 touch points for a prospect to start to engage with you.
Amplify Your Brand Identity, Focus On Visibility & Automate
Michael Buzinski, Buzzworthy Marketing
Refine and amplify their brand identity and visibility through targeted, authentic marketing. Many small firms struggle to differentiate themselves in a crowded legal market, leading to missed growth opportunities. By clearly defining who they are, what makes them unique, and how they provide value to their clients, law firms can build stronger connections with potential clients.
Focusing on visibility through optimized digital marketing, social proof, and thought leadership can significantly boost a firm’s credibility and client acquisition. In 2025, firms should leverage strategic content marketing, local SEO, and client testimonials to stand out, ensuring that they’re visible and trusted by the right audience. Building a strong, recognizable brand backed by client-focused marketing will set them up for long-term growth and success. They can't afford to relay on referrals and networking if they want to see significantly profitable growth by the end of 2025.
To help keep everything related to marketing and sales in order and automate many mundane marketing tasks, firms should also consider implementing a client relationship management system (CRM). A CRM helps by centralizing client data, tracking interactions, and ensuring that no leads or opportunities slip through the cracks. It also automates routine tasks, such as scheduling appointments, task reminders, and onboarding paperwork, freeing up more time for billable work and personal client interactions. Additionally, using a CRM provides valuable insights into client behavior, helping law firms better tailor their services and marketing efforts.
Optimal Business Practices For Small Law Firm Growth
Get Your Cybersecurity In Check
Dan DeFay, NorthStar Technology Group
If there’s one thing every small or solo law firm should do to make 2025 their best year yet, it’s prioritizing cybersecurity as a foundational part of their strategy. Clients are becoming increasingly selective about data security, and firms that proactively protect sensitive information will stand out as trusted, client-focused choices.
This proactive stance not only minimizes the risk of costly breaches but also builds a foundation of trust that fosters long-term client relationships. In 2025, cybersecurity isn’t just about defense; it’s a strategic advantage that can drive growth, client loyalty, and sustainable success.
Be Proactive To Retain Your Employees
Michael Schodrof, Alex Brown/Raymond James
Are you doing enough to retain your employees? A 401k is expected, in some states, required by law. A Cash Balance Plan is an aspirational goal as most big law firms have one and it locks employees in and the pre-tax contribution maximums are very high for the founder and senior employees of the firm.
